Women's Enterprising BreakthroughQueens Award
Women's Enterprising Breakthrough (WEB) are delighted to have been nominated and chosen to receive the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. It was an honour to be nominated as 1 of the 71 groups that received the award for this year, and an even bigger honour to realise that we were 1 of only 2 voluntary organisations in the whole of the North West region that has actually received the award for 2007. A recommendation was made by the Minister for the Third Sector to Her Majesty the Queen, in order for our organisation to receive the award. The Queen's Award means a lot to us at WEB, because as an organisation, we underwent quite a rigorous vetting process in order to receive the award. This included the staff, management, volunteers, and women who use the service being independently interviewed. Please click here for more information about the Queen's Award About Us Women's Enterprising Breakthrough is a community based service provider situated in the north end of Birkenhead that's supports 'All Women', regardless of the labels that have been placed upon them by services and society. We welcome ALL women from the age of 16 up. However we also have an activity night for young women on a Wednesday evening which starts from 5:30pm - 7:30pm for age ranges: 9 - 12 year olds and from 7:30pm – 9:30pm for age ranges from: 13 – 16 year olds. WEB's aims are to provide a high quality service to such women which:
Many women who come to us have feelings of loneliness and isolation; it could be empty nest syndrome, or varying forms of depression, from mild to clinical. Some women have low self esteem and lack hope due to their difficult and varying circumstances. Some women may simply be experiencing relationship problems, and may need someone independent to talk to, or to discuss their worries. Local women originally established the Centre in 1994, the aim simply to support other women who were struggling in one way or another. Since its inception the Centre has worked with over 2,200 women and their children and was recognised for its work in 2007 as one of only 2 organisations in Merseyside to receive the Queen's Award for voluntary service. It is constituted as both a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. WEB operates on the basis of a "service user–led" ethos and this is a significant factor in making it unique, along with the consistent emphasis on quality. As a result of service user input over the last 17 years WEB has developed the following services:
WEB has been facilitating 2 'Young Women's Groups' since 2003, one for ages 9 – 12 year olds, and one for 13 – 16 year olds. The young women who attend the Centre are primarily from the North End of Birkenhead. Many young women have informed us that the 'Women's Centre' is the only place they feel that they can take time out for themselves. WEB engages with many of these young women simply because we respect and value every woman and young person who walks through our doors. We offer a range of activities; arts and crafts, card making, jewellery making, pottery painting, and board games that support the young women to integrate naturally and respectfully with others. We have trained and qualified therapists who offer beauty and pampering sessions that support young women to develop a pride in their personal care and hygiene, and also offer nurturing touch through aromatherapy massage. The service we provide meets the basic needs of the young women, this includes having a safe
and nurturing environment in which to talk, be themselves, to share their fears and develop aspirations for the
future. We support young women to develop a sense of self worth, an inner confidence, and to explore their
personal growth, and future potential, which, in turn will reduce social exclusion and isolation.
